GemEinsam // expanded hybrid animation
Role: Animator, Voice Actor & Sound Designer

The Idea
„gem.einsam“ is a collaborative exhibition piece, which conveys the feeling of being alone and community simultaneously. The concept was to show an apartment building where you can see into the rooms – each depicting a different form of solitude. We decided to create a physical miniature of a building, on which we would project the finished animation in a loop. This would create a more immersive and engaging experience for the viewers by having things happen at the same time.

The Production
While one team was working on the miniature, my team, as well as eight others, created an animation for each of the nine rooms. We decided to use a mixture of real footage and 2D animation. My teammate (Viktoria Heng) was building the room and its accessories, I was responsible for the Animation and Sound Design. We thought that most of the teams would go for sad or calm themes, so we went in the opposite direction. I tried to create a chaotic and overly expressive character, hoping to introduce a different tone to the project. I was also tasked with the final mixing and mastering of the project. For this, I tried to connect the stories as best as possible, by adding ambience and overlapping sounds without each of them interfering with one another.

The Result
The final product was exhibited at INTR for two days by projecting the finished film onto the physical house sculpture. I aimed to connect the stories and guide the audience’s gaze by panning the audio to match the corresponding positions on the house, using strategic sound effects to draw attention to key moments. The projection worked as intended, and we successfully created the illusion of a living, breathing space – where each room felt distinct yet interconnected, immersing viewers in a multi-sensory experience of solitude and community.
